First the story was about how a person suddenly realized that his life should amount to a higher purpose than it had previously. He could do that by helping his nephew in business, and by helping his poverty stricken clerk and by getting medical help for Tiny Tim. That gives us a good feeling. Second, the story carries Marley's message, "The deeds that men do follow them." Scrooge saw that at his death the only purpose his life would have served would be for the stuff other people could take from his apartment. The story deals with our death and what will our lives have accomplished. Will we have left behind anything more than just some stuff.
