Harvey Milk was a city supervisor in the city of San Francisco and California's first openly gay elected public official. On November 27, 1978, he and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by Dan White. City supervisor Dianne Feinstein stepped into the breach as acting mayor and thus began her path to the U.S. Senate.
