Elizebeth Freeman was a slave born about 1744. At 6 months she and her sisiter, also named Elizebeth, were sold to John Ashley of Sheffield, Massachusetts, whom she served tell she was about 40.

One day, Mrs. Ashley became angry with her sister. She grabbed a hot fire stick and tried to hit Her sisiter. Elizabeth got in the way of that, probably saving her sister's life. Later with the help of Theodore Sedgewick, a lawyer. she sued for her freedom, She adopted the surname "Freeman" after she won her freedom.
