Are you sure it doesn't say 'TEXAS RANGER'? We've seen single-shot shotguns marked with a 1929 date and the words 'TEXAS RANGER' stamped in the side of the receiver. These were early H&R shotguns made for Montgomery Wards made before World War II. sales@countrygunsmith.net Actually, the "Texas Ranger" was a name used on the Model 1929 12 guage single barrelled shotgun produced by J. Stevens for Montgomery Ward's, I am certain it was not produced by H&R for Ward's.
Excel was a trade name used by HD Folsom Arms and Iver Johnson Arms and Cycle Works on shotguns made for Montgomery Wards.
