The Revolt in St. Domingue (Haiti) was the most successful slave revolt of all time, and the only slave revolt to establish an independent country. Its success could be attributed to several factors. It was highly organized, led by free people of color, who were often the children of white slave owners and African women. These people were usually educated by their fathers, and were as impressed by Enlightenment thought as our patriots had been when the United States sought freedom. As a result of an ongoing conflict between European powers, Spain supported and joined the side of the slaves to fight against the French army.
