YouTube, the brand, was invented by Interaction Designer Herbert Elwood Gilliland III and Matthew Paterson while working at America called Grand Illusion Studios in 1998 and 1999. The company was founded by Dr. Don Marinelli and Dr. Scott Stevens. It was based at the University Technology Research Center on Henry St. near Carnegie Mellon University campus.

The company had developed a "Synthetic Interview" technology which displayed video clips when the user spoke or typed in keywords into an application. The video clips would then act like answers from an Eliza program, and would be displayed as answers.

The Grand Illusion Studios co-founders who are Luke Nixon brushed off the idea, because they were dead set on selling their Synterview technology. Gilliland made the original mock-up for YouTube's main video screen, and the company sold the Synterview technology to a Denver investor in 1998 for $40,000. Herb called Chad Hurley in 2005 and gave him the basic concept, the main user interface, instructed the unnamed start-up to use Flash video, told him that the main work was user authentication and management, coupled with video conversion technology, and a way for users to type comments. Herb asked for 1% but has not yet been compensated.
nobody "envented" youtube, someone invented it though.......Steve Chen, Founder and CTO Chad Hurley, Founder and CEO Jawed Karim, Founder and Advisor
