Christmas is a pagan holiday. The encyclopedia states so. Christmas began as a "coming of the winter" festival for many cultures, it just varied somewhat from culture to culture. The church crafted a belief that Jesus was born "Dec 25" and that gave us reason to celebrate on that given day, even though the non-changed original bible manuscripts never state an exact date (Dec 25) nor does it give any hints that Jesus was born in the dead of winter. The small hints it gives us point to Jesus being born in the fall rather in December. Anyways, to answer the question, Chrismas was celebrated in many different ways by many different cultures around the world who recognized that winter had started. As the holiday became more commercialized, a mish-MASH of eccentricism ensued.
Christmas was first celebrated in the 7th century.
