Oliver Cromwell and his Parliament did abolish Christmas in 1647. Christians of the time believed the acts of decorating and feasting to be pagan in nature. After the celebration of Christmas was abolished, the ban on Christmas did not lift until 1660 when Oliver Cromwell was no longer in power.
Christmas was never canceled I disagree. In England, Christmas was abolished by Act of Parliament passed by the Puritans in 1647. The ban lasted until the Restoration of King Charles II in 1660. In New England, the records of the General Court, Massachusetts Bay Court mention banning Christmas on the 11th of May 1659. This ban was revoked by the Governor, Sir Edmund Andros in 1681. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_in_Puritan_New_England

Oliver Cromwell
The famous English figure associated with the ban from 1647 to 1660 is King Charles I. During this period, he faced significant opposition from Parliament and was eventually executed in 1649, leading to the establishment of the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell. The monarchy was temporarily abolished, and England was declared a republic until the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.

In 1647, The English Parliament passed a law that made Christmas illegal. Christmas festivities were banned by Puritan leader Oliver Cromwell, who considered feasting and revelry on what was suppose to be a holy day to be immoral. Anyone caught celebrating was arrested. The ban was only lifted when the Puritans lost power in 1660. However, the Puritans in America banned Christmas between 1659 and 1681.
