The story of Rudolph was written by Robert L. May in 1939, and published by Montgomery Ward.

Johnny Marks was May's brother-in-law and decided to adapt the story/poem into a song.

It was popularized by Gene Autry in 1949.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is not in "A Visit From Saint Nicholas" as that poem was written in 1823, and Rudolph did not exist until 1939.
