Dell and HP are two very good competitors.
In my opinion:
HP - Good operating system. Responsive and intuitive. Prices are reasonable. The speakers are beats by monster, so you will be getting that better sound.
Dell - Again, responsive and intuitive. Prices are good. Fairly standard designs, better for the "average user".
It's hard to say which one is better because it personal preference. If comes down to the processor, RAM, HHD (SSD) and basic interface. I hope this has helped.
I've worked with both Dell & Lenovo (formally IBM) in the school systems. They are popular in schools simply because each company's focusing on acquiring large, long-term district-level contracts. Schools and many corporations like both Dell & Lenovo because of what they offer in good service contracts--which are very timely if you need a computer repaired within 48 hours. These service contracts are great for a large company buying scores of machines, but pricey for a single individual who wants the same support.
After saying all this, as a computer IT engineer who works on both, Dell & Lenovo products are about the same in quality and lifespan. Brand name recognition--especially in technology--has little meaning nor guarantees a better product anymore.
If you're looking for a laptop for you, ask yourself first, "What am I going to be using it for?". That question alone is the reason my personal laptop is neither a Dell or a Lenovo. If you're looking for good service contract, make sure you get a "bumper-to-bumper" warranty (that means it covers monitor damage too). Normally I don't get these, but Best Buy had a great bumper-to-bumper that also covered the laptop being dropped. Compare the manufacture's service warranty against the store you buy the laptop from.
When laptops are bench-marked, When we lift up the lid of all the laptops, all the same parts pop out relevant to the prices. Lenovo or Dell ? That is a very typical question. The ratings are different for different people. The performance is not. As mentioned earlier, they will have the same parts relevant to the prices. For e.g...the HP Pavilion g6 series...Asus...HCL me....Samsung Np...all have the same parts under the lids...So, Think which brand's store is nearest to your house so that you receive the best service and buy from that brand...

Both the HP and Lenovo laptops are good laptops and each have their strengths and weaknesses.
Going by the number of sales and customer reviews, the HP laptop is better than Lenovo.
