Both because they both have effects that can damage your body or brain

I would disagree with the above statement, Nicotine is no more harmful to your body than Caffeine and both are classed the same in addictiveness. LD50 Nicotine 50mg / Caffeine 192mg.

In any case Nicotine gum is FDA approved as a stop smoking plan and far safer than smoking.

Tar is a sticky black carcinogenic substance from which roads are made. It causes lung irritation if inhaled, for example by smoking tobacco. Nicotine is a stimuant (drug) which causes the heartbeat to speed up. This is also absorbed by smoking tobacco.

Does nicorette gum cause gum disease?

Nicorette gum contains nicotine, the addictive ingredient in cigarettes. While nicotine does not 'cause' gum disease, it has been shown to contribute to the severity of the disease. Nicotine is toxic to cells called fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are cells that create and rebuild connective tissue in the body. Connective tissue is destroyed in gum disease, and when fibroblast function is impaired by nicotine, the body's ability to fight off the disease is significantly limited. Therefore, gum disease generally tends to be more severe in people who ingest or inhale nicotine.

Why are people so addicted to cigarettes?

Nicotine is used in the making of cigarettes and most people use it as a depressant. It also causes the release of natural chemicals in our brain called beta-endorphins. These chemicals cause us to feel more alert and calm. The problem is that nicotine isn't stored in the body so these effects last only a few minutes. We need to absorb more and more nicotine to make the effects last. because of nicotine, a drug that makes your brain think that it needs more through physical dependence (that's when you get other side effects when you don't smoke).
