I would say the 9mm Beretta. I am not an expert so someone else might not agree but that's my opinion.

They both have their strong and weak points. One of the biggest problems encountered with the M9, function-wise, is the crappy aftermarket magazines. However, with proper factory magazines, and Beretta 92/99 series pistol (as well as the Taurus PT92/99 series) is very reliable.

Advantages of the M9 include:

  • Magazine capacity - holds 15 rounds vs. seven rounds in the M1911
  • Double action capability - a feature lacking in the M1911

Disadvantages include:

  • Hammer drop safety - cannot be carried "cocked and locked" the way the M1911 can. It's interesting to note, however, that the Taurus PT92 (Taurus obtained a licence from Beretta and modified the design) has a frame mounted safety which allows for such a carry method.
  • Less powerful cartridge - 9x19, as opposed to .45 ACP

Advantages of the M1911 include:

  • Cartridge - The .45 ACP is considerably more powerful than the 9x19
  • Ability to be carried "cocked and locked"

Disadvantages include:

  • Heavier recoil and longer recovery time between shots
  • Reduced magazine capacity
  • Single action only
