The tactical situation will dictate which one would be "better" in a particular engagement scenario.

M1 Garand excels at longer ranges. Thompson is much more maneuverable in tight quarters and with high ammo capacity and automatic fire is useful against large numbers.

In short, squads of soldiers have a combination of arms, submachine guns LMGs and rifles, riflemen and automatic riflemens' roles are to suppress the enemy at long range, and submachine gunners' roles are to close in with and defeat the enemy at close ranges. This combination of weapons in each squad, is what makes the squad so versitile in effectivly dealing with almost any threat and scenerio they come up against.
