The effective range of an M-4 assault rifle is 500m (550 yards). This is a point target distance. Meaning the distance at which one can shoot a human sized target. The area target is 600m or (660 yards). This means you can shoot and hit a target the size of a car at this disance. To answer the initial question the maximum range of this particular rifle is 3600m. I'm currently in the U.S. Army serving in Korea, this can be confirmed on google. The Army FM (Field Manual) is 3-22.9 reagrding this issue.
