Marley is also there to explain to Scrooge his bad deeds and wrong doings and warn him of the terrible fate that will come if he does not change his ways, such as when he informs Scrooge on his "ponderous chain" he has forged, he says, "The weight and length of the coil you bear yourself? It was full and heavy as this, seven Christmas Eves ago. You have labored on it since." Marley was also Scrooge's only friend and now that he died, the reader is shown Scrooge's loneliness.
