Among Christian nations- it has always been a Cosmopolitan, that is, world-wide holiday. I would imagine the Holy Land ( now called the Middle East), pilgrimages to Manger Square in Bethelem and of course Rome- the seat of the Roman Catholic Church. Practically all European nations have national-specific Christmas customs- an old and maybe objectionable Italian one involves firing a huge Cannon- with an illuminating star-shell at precisely 2359 Hours on Christmas Eve , in Rome- this is supposed to simulate the Star of Bethlehem. There are less formal varieties of fireworks as a Yule Custom in Italy~! French customs do NOT involve the use of bells or wreaths on Christmas cards- they think that is morbid- and so on. all sorts of constructive- Model RR, miniature villages- and of course the Tannenbaum out of Germany, and so on.
The Christmas date has always celebrated the birth of Christ. There are stories about Christmas being celebrated in Holland because of St. Nicholas but the original Christmas date celebrates the birth of Christ as signified by the syllables in the holiday.
