Ice cream is made in the US, but it was not invented there. There were many precursors to ice cream from the Persian empire, the Roman empire, and ancient China. Most of these involved snow mixed with fruit and other sweet ingredients. The first ice cream that was similar to modern ice cream came about in England in the early 18th century. It was almost identical to the hard ice cream you buy scoops of today. It wasn't until the 20th century that the softer, whipped form of ice cream was developed, again in England, by a team of chemists that included Margaret Thatcher, who went on to become Prime Minister.
The Great Basin does not cover the entire middle of the US, but it does cover most of the state of Nevada.
