Australian households begin putting up their Christmas decorations any time after the beginning of December. However, shopping centres sometimes begin their Christmas displays as early as September, as there are no other major holidays between the beginning of Spring and Christmas.
It started in the Victorian era with the Royals when they put angels on their Christmas trees. The star represented the star of Bethlehem, and the angel represented an angel proclaiming the birth of Jesus.

Carols by Candlelight is an Australian Christmas tradition. It began in Melbourne on Christmas Eve 1938, and was the brainchild of radio veteran Norman Banks, inspired by the sight of a woman in a window, her face lit by a candle as she sang along with Away in a Manger on the radio.
