The journey got off to a slow start because the Corps of Discovery were moving their boats against the current. They left May of 1804 and reached the Mandan Indian villages in North Dakota in late October. They built a small fort and spent the winter with the friendly Mandan. In the spring of 1805 they finally set out again.

The Mandan tribe was agreeable to the goals of Lewis and Clark, and their Corps of Discovery project. However, in spite of peace talks with a neighboring tribe, the Arikaras, fighting broke out. Fortunately, the Mandans kept their relationship with the explorers positive and provided them with food in trade for other goods.
