The name comes from Japan, They are also known as "fox-spirits" and "children of the fox". They are literally people who can change into foxes.

Kitsune (fox-spirits) are just legends to most people who have never either seen one or aren't aware of what is out there because a lot of people can't see the spirit realm. The Kitsune (actual, normal foxes) are what people in Japan usually refer to the actual animal which is visible to anyone and everyone and you can find them in a lot of places.

Kitsune are Japanese fox-spirits. Some people believe that you can find them anywhere where foxes thrive because they are the spirits of foxes, aside from the fact of them being Japanese in name, (kitsune-meaning fox).

What is a nogitsune?

A Nogitsune is a Japanese fox spirit, much like the Kitsune. Though, unlike the Kitsune, Nogitsune refuse to serve the Japanese deity of rice Inari, and prefer to cause havoc and turmoil amongst humans and other fox spirits. In short... Evil, sentient, shapeshifting foxes (this may or may not be right, but this is what I have concluded after reading an a$$ load of Japanese lore and legends...)

Is Totoro a tanuki?

No , Totoro is not a raccoon like creature but a "god of the forest" or "keeper of the forest" . [The characters from Pom Poko are indeed tanuki or shape shifting foxes/kitsune.]
