Rimfire priming compound is not available to the general public for a very good reason- and that is the same reason I will NOT describe how to make it. Priming compounds are extremely pressure sensitive explosives, SO sensitive that they cannot be handled when they are dry. A tiny amount of the priming compound, in the form of a wet paste, is inserted into the empty cartridge case, which is spun, forcing the priming material into the fold of the cartridge case head. The material is dried, and once dry, cannot be handled without a strong likelihood that it will detonate. Priming compound work is perhaps the most dangerous aspect of an ammunition plant. Even with very specific controls, there have been accidents involving priming compound that have killed workers.

Can you use rimfire cartridges in a centerfire rifle?

No. The terms "rimfire" & "centerfire" should self-explain. On rimfire the priming compound is in the rim of the cartridge and on centerfire the primer with the priming compound is in the center of the cartridge.

How do rimfire cartridges work?

The priming compound is spun into the rim of the case, and, when the firearm's firing pin strikes and indents the rim of the cartridge, the priming mixture ignites and in turn ignites the propellant--hence the name "rimfire."

How do you make a primer for a rimfire bullet?

A rimfire CARTRIDGE uses a dab of wet priming compound that is placed in the cartridge case, and the case is spun at high speed to force the material out into the folded rim. The priming material, usually based on lead azide, is an extremely sensitive explosive, and cannot be safely shaped or handled except when wet. After the material dries, the case is loaded with powder and a bullet. When the cartridge is fired, the folded rim is pinched by the firing pin, causing the primer material to explode, igniting the powder. There is no safe way to effectively renew a rimfire primer.

How can you tell if ammo is rimfire or centerfire?

Centerfire ammunition has a round primer at the rear center. Looks like a circle. Rimfire ammo is made with priming material in the folded over rim of the cartridge. It will have a smooth base of the cartridge- may have letters stamped there, but no circle for the primer.

Can you still buy 25 rim fire or can you make 25 rim fire?

You cannot make a rimfire cartridge because you need the proper tools and machinery. You may look up some companies that make obsolete ammunition, such as Old Western Scrounger. The .25 Rimfire has been out of production for nearly 50 years, but now and again a maker will produce a limited quantity of ammo. Please do not try to make RF ammo as a home project- the priming compound is extremely sensitive, and very dangerous to handle.

How do you make a primer?

you form a cup and then place an anvil an priming compound in it.

What is the main difference between centerfire and rimfire ammunition?

It is a difference in the placement of the priming compound. This compound is sensitive to physical impact, and, being struck by the firing pin, explodes to ignite the gunpowder in the cartridge case. In the rimfire cartridge, the case, made of soft brass, has a folded rim. Primer compound placed inside that folded rim is exploded when the rim is pinched between the firing pin and the mouth of the chamber. Centerfire ammunition has the primer in a pocket at the rear center of the cartridge case. That case has harder brass, and is capable of handling higher pressures than rimfire ammunition. Centerfire ammunition can be reloaded after firing by replacing the primer, powder and bullet. Rimfire ammo is not generally reloadable.

Is CCI 17hmr centerfire or rimfire?

What is the difference between an centerfire and a rimfire rifle?

The difference between rimfire and centerfire rifles would be the type of cartridge they use. Rimfire cartridges are an older design. In a rimfire cartridge, the priming compound (impact-sensitive substance that produces the spark to ignite the gunpowder) is located inside the hollow rim of the cartridge case. The firing pin crushes the rim against the chamber mouth to fire the cartridge. In a centerfire cartridge, the priming compound is located inside a small metal cup called a primer, which is made separate from the casing. The cup is inserted into a hole in the center of the base of the cartridge. The firing pin strikes the primer crushing it against an internal anvil to produce the spark. Rimfire cases are made of soft brass so that the firing pin can crush the rim. However, this makes them unsuitable for higher chamber pressures. Centerfire cartridge brass is much harder, because only the primer cup needs to be soft. With the switch from black powder to smokeless powder, higher chamber pressures became commonplace and rimfire cartridges became largely obsolete. The most common rimfire cartridge in use today is .22LR, popular for target shooting and pest control. Due to low cost and low recoil it is probably the most popular cartridge in the world.

What does rimfire and centerfire mean?

A centrefire cartridge has a primer centred at the rear of the casing. This primer contains a charge which is ignited when the primer is struck (normally by a firing pin, though some guns will have the pin integral with the hammer), and this ignites the gunpowder whidh propels the bullet forward. Rimfire guns work in pretty much the same fashion, except that they don't use primers. Rather, the priming charge is packed into the rim of the cartridge.
