Universal M-1 Carbines are a civilian version of the mass produced military rifles and, in my personal opinion, quite fine and dependable firearms! I have worked on many Universals regarding trigger work, etc. and most owners, knowing quality when they have it in their hands in the field, are unwilling to sell them at any price.
The problem is that Universal broke the "status-quo" mold, making a great rifle better in the out-of-battery issues category M-1 Carbines (aka face rippers) became known for and in doing so the receiver group is larger/different than the mass produced clones. Because of this, finding a "drop-in" synthetic or other stock is near impossible due to the lack of mass market manufacturer's lack of seeing a hot market when its right there in front of them. Wood stocks CAN be successfully modified to fit Universal M-1 Carbine rifles by a skilled gunsmith who's experience includes these rifles! I've done it many times and it is labor intensive....in other words, NOT CHEAP!
My suggestion, as I just told a customer last week, is to save your money, re-finish what you have and wait for the people at Ram-Line and alike to wake the F up. Eventually, especially in this economy, they will recognize this fine weapon and the market-in-waiting. My money is on Ram-Line as far as finally hearing the wake up call...so far Zzz!
