the answer is circumstantial, maybe he wanted to break up with his girlfriend to be with you, maybe he does honestly like you, but wants to take it slow by not saying your in a relationship, because of his recent break up. it would also depend on weather he made the split or the ex did. or maybe like you say it could just be a rebound.
