Depending upon where you work, smoking while on the job may not be banned. However, in the United States a large number of states and muncipalities have banned smoking in most public places between the years 2000 and 2012.

Some of the first smoking bans in grocery stores were implemented by local or countywide ordinances beginning in the early-1970's. Today, very few supermarkets permit smoking, even those that aren't covered by a a specific state law or a local ordinance. All corporately-owned supermarkets (i.e. Walmart, Target) have banned smoking inside their stores per company policy.

It depends on the state and city. Some cities banned smoking in theaters as early as the late 1960's. The latest smoking ban date that I'm aware of is Wichita in September 2008.
