When firing a handgun what's the distance you're supposed to hold it from your body?

There is no specific distance. If you take handgun training on any advanced level, you will be taught to shoot from a retention position, which means holding the gun in very close so another person cannot grab it. However, most instructors teach a rudimentary position of holding the gun in your strong hand with your other hand wrapped around the gun, with your arms extended almost all the way out, but without locking your elbows.
