Much of the gay rights movement started in the early 1970s. Gay marriage in Canada was first legalized in 2005. The first state to legalize gay marriage (I believe Massachussetts) did it around the same time.

How did the Massachusetts Supreme Court legalize same-sex marriage in Massachusetts?

On November 18, 2003, in Goodridge v. Dept of Health, the Court ruled that the state marriage laws were unconstitutional to the extent that they denied gay couples equal marriage rights. The court left the marriage laws intact, but gave the Massachusetts legislature 180 days to remedy the situation. The legislature initially did nothing. As a result, Governor Mitt Romney ordered town clerks to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples on May 17, 2004. Afterwards, the legislature eventually go around to codifying the change into law and did so with Mitt Romney's signature on the bill.
