People started celebrating birthday's when they first wrote the calender.
The parties and gifts came about because people believed that a person
was more vulnerable when their daily routine was changed, such as
someone turning one year older. The gifts were to keep the evil spirits at
bay because they believed keeping the person happy and surrounding
them with friends and family was the way to keep them nasty bastards out :]
Hope that helps!

Birthdays are believed to have originated in ancient Egypt, where the pharaohs were celebrated on their coronation day, marking their "birth" as a god. The ancient Greeks later adopted this practice, associating it with the worship of Artemis, the goddess of the moon, and celebrated with cakes shaped like the moon. The tradition evolved over time, with the Romans also celebrating birthdays, especially for the wealthy, as a way to honor individuals and mark personal milestones. Today, birthdays are widely celebrated across cultures as a way to recognize and celebrate an individual's life and achievements.
Because it is when you were born and you should celebrate that.
People sent postcards to other people in celebration on birthdays, when they were on holiday to let them know how it was going. when they were first invented, it was the receiver, that had to pay for the postage!! :)
