The Act Prohibiting the Importation of Slaves was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Thomas Jefferson in March of 1807 and took effect January 1, 1808.

A further act was passed in 1820 which classified the attempt to collect and transport people for the purposes of importing them into slavery an act of piracy, punishable by death.
