Generally speaking, no. A few states, 5 or 6, require gun registration, but in most of the U.S. there is no registration. The 4473 form you fill out stays at the gun shop for 20 years, then after that, the gun shop can shred and dispose of the forms, but that isn't the same thing as having to register the gun.
Most states do not HAVE a system to register guns. When you buy a gun from a Dealer, the dealer keeps a copy of the record of the sale at their shop.
No practical way to do this. If the seller was a dealer, and you filled out paperwork at the show, you may be able to go to the dealer and have them check their records. If you do not know who the dealer was, no way.
A dealer at a gun show is a licenced FFL dealer, the same as any dealer who owns a gun shop with a store front.
Gun Dealer happened in 1990.
Gun Dealer was created in 1990.
ONLY ATF has that answer. If you have a good buddy who is a cop, he can look up if it's Stolen or not. That's about it.
You canj go back and talk with the dealer you bought the gun from- if they are still in business They WILL need to know when you bought the gun. Dealers maintain records of sales for 20 years per Federal law. Next time, have an inventory with serial numbers and pictures.Added: If you bought it from a private party, hopefully you will have a bill-of-sale from them for the weapon, or you may know them. Contact them to see if they may have kept a record of it, or ask if they can put you in contact with the dealer they bought it from. If you/they don't have these records - you are pretty much SOL.
The internet. <><><> However, you will still (in most cases) need to have the gun shipped to a local dealer, and you take delivery from that dealer. Besides the internet (and I have bought several there) you can also check with local dealers, or visit a gun show.
Any time you purchase a firearm from a dealer, Federal law requires that the dealer must run a background check at that time. The exception is that certain states issue a concealed weapons license that ALSO requires a background check- proof of licensing takes the place of a background check. So if you bought a gun from a dealer, you have had a background check made.
Depends on where you are. Despite common belief, in MOST of the US, there are NO guns registered to you, since there is no registration of ordinary firearms. A Dealer must maintain a record of any gun sold for a period of 20 years. Those records are retained at the shop.
