Depending on the weight of the gun. The 7mm magnum uses a slow burning powder and also uses a lot of powder creating a higher barrel pressure which gives the gun the kick. A heavier gun will kick less than a lighter gun of the same caliber.

They used boys because they could move up and down the ladders quickly, the deck space was small so they got in/out easily, and they were expendable. They too didn't last long because if the ship took fire they were often killed getting the gun powder or blown up because of the gun powder. A lot of young colonial boys worked behind the scenes running messages between the troops and commanders as well.

The priming gun powder charge was also very prone to getting wet in the rain or having a lot of trouble with any kind of moisture, which renders the gun inoperable. The percussion cap relied on pressure to activate a chemical reaction which was not prone to moisture related problems and the flash immediately transferred to the propellant charge, thus reducing firing time.
