Historically, there were few gun laws but as there never were wild frontiers or revolutionary wars, as well as the fact shooting sports tended to be restricted to the upper class, gun ownership was never high even before guns were banned. It was the "Red Scare" after the Russian Revolution that the Government began laying down strict gun laws. After the horrific massacres at Hungerford in 1987 and Dunblane in 1996, they were tightened further still.
