Following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, Congress went to work adding the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution. The Senate passed the Amendment on April 8, 1864, the House of Representatives ratified it January 31, 1865 and it was adopted as law December 6, 1865.
