There is no specific date or month for that. But traditionally retailers begin advertising for christmas after Thanksgiving Day, which is 22nd of November.
The afternoon on Black Friday. Not in the morning because people will be crowding the area. Also go the day after, more likely stores have kept their deals the same as the day before.
Australian households begin putting up their Christmas decorations any time after the beginning of December. However, shopping centres sometimes begin their Christmas displays as early as September, as there are no other major holidays between the beginning of Spring and Christmas.
Many people begin shopping for Christmas decorations very early in the year. Because Christmas is such a huge holiday, most people like to spread out the expenses over the course of several months. It actually helps the customers to have decorations out early to help with budgeting.
Christmas greeting cards usually begin to show up in stores following the celebration of Thanksgiving. Christmas greeting cards are another form of income for stores that sell cards. There are always cards in stores for the next holiday.
Although both holidays have become very commercialized, I believe Christmas is more commercial. Mostly because retailers begin advertising Christmas earlier every year and target gift giving.

During Christmas it is amazing what stores offer lighted Christmas decorations. One place that offers beautiful decorations is the Cracker Barrel Restaurant. They begin selling their Christmas items at the end of July and have beautiful decorations.
Close to the winter holidays, many places will begin selling chocolate Santa cookies or chocolates. Commonly, they can be found in grocery stores, super markets, conviences stores, bakeries, candy / sweets shops, and large shopping stores or malls.
Advertising makes Christmas a more commercial holiday. There is more about buying toys and gifts than about celebrating love, family, and religion, rather than the religious holiday that it originally was. It's no longer as much about the birth of Christ as it once was. Nowadays, people try to sue if there is a nativity scene put up in the city, which also shows how skewed the perspective has become. ( since without that scene there wouldn't be a Christmas to begin with...).
When the holidays come.
