What is indentured?

Indentured Service is when a person agrees to work for another in return for training, travel or education. It was first mentioned in the Torah, Bible as a person that was a gentile that wanted to become a Christian. They would give six (6) years of service to their teacher. The teacher/master would have them work their land or repair their home as they learned the Bible. This went on through the age's to where it was also used in the 13 Colonies. Anyone but a Christian could be an indentured servant. Any non-Christian could be an indentured servant, not based on color. This indentured servitude became 'slavery', (lifetime indentured service), first through the servant illegally breaking their contract and then finally through the greed of the teacher/master.

Here are some sentences. In order to come to America, Molly became an indentured servant to Captain Mitchell. The indentured servants did most of the work around the house. It was common for people to become indentured servants to pay off a debt.Indentured servants worked hard for their masters in return for their masters paying for their journey to the New World.

Why do you think indentured servants became less common as slavery grew?

Indentured servants were suppose to work for 7 years, but often after a couple of years they would leave the indentured contract and faded into the population. When that happened they couldn't be separated from other people because they were white. The slave on the other hand would always be a slave no matter where he/she went because they were black. To leave a plantation they needed a pass and any white person could stop them asking to see the pass. Slaves were owned by another person and considered property an indentured servant was a worker under contract so it was easier to buy a slave for the same amount of money spent on the indentured servant. The slave couldn't escape easily and could be picked out because he/she was black.

Why did landowners prefer slaves to indentured servants?

Slaves could be worked longer and harder and treated poorer than indentured servants, making them a financially better deal for the owners. In addition, as the laws changed, the children of slaves became slaves themselves. Indentured servants would move on when their debt was paid.

What type of person became an indentured servant?

Most indentured servants were poor people from Europe who had signed themselves into contracts on tobacco farms in the New World. Contracts lasted 5 years and would then give the newly freed servant their own plot of land to plant and live on. Unfortunately, tobacco prices crashed and many were forced to sign another contract after the first five years to survive or go into debt trying to raise their own crop.

Why did plantation owners MOST prefer to use slaves over indentured servants?

There were two reasons why they turned to slavery. The first one is indentured servitude was a contract for 7 years and often people didn't finish out their contract once they arrived. This meant that they could fade into the population of colonists and no one would know they were indentured servants. While slaves were African American and anyone who was black was a slave no matter where they were. This is the second reason why slaves became popular because no matter where they were they could be picked out as a slave. To leave a plantation they had to have a pass, and slaves were property while indentured servants were workers.
