All African Americans were slaves, so they could be stopped and questioned if they were off of the plantation. The plantations were huge acres of land so many people were needed. By 1860 there were 6 million slaves in the south in slavery.

Wealthy white Christian males owned plantations in colonial North Carolina and also owned many African American slaves or indentured servants.
