Before the introduction of interchangeable parts an item was useless when it broke. Guns were a perfect example of this problem. A part in a gun had to be made from scratch to fit that particular gun. Today, a part breaks and you can get another one that will work as well as the first. You don't have to wait 6 months for a part and then not have it work. Interchangeable parts changed production and allowed for items to be used for longer times.
It was the gun. The first mass produced gun with interchangeable parts was produced the percussion ignition smooth bore musket produced by the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1850.

This gun is not considered very durable. However, the parts are easily obtained and interchangeable so that offsets the durability issue.
DO NOT TRY THIS!! Never use parts not made for the weapon you are using ****From what I've read in other shotgun forums, the stocks may be interchangeable on the two. As far as barrels and receivers and action parts, that's going to be a no.
