IN is original life he had, with Marley built a business that was for the time very successful He was considered wealthy despite the fact that he didnt not use that wealth but lived a miserly life. Following his meeting with the 3 Ghosts and the Ghost of Marley he changed his way of life, became more giving and people friendly and made the lives of others more comfortable. In effect he lived each day as though it were "Christmas"
