S&W Frame and Yoke Numbers LocationHello, You are asking a question that has a wide spectrum of answers. Depending on the year, model and type. You may find your answer at Jim Supica's site thearmchairgunshow. He has written books on these fine firearms.
Varies by type/model of weapon.
Generally it is the prefix letter of the serial number for example N102770 would be an N frame. It can also be ascertained by the model number. 25,27,28,29,57,58, 520 629 are N frames. 14,15,16,17,18,19,48,53,66,67,68 and their pre model versions are K frames.
Impossible to answer without the model, type of action and serial number.
Type in Smith and Wesson in google or bing and it will appear.
Need to know caliber, barrel length, and type of action.
N is the designation of the type of frame the gun was made on. J is for small revolvers(Model 36,37,38,40,42,49,60,etc.) K is for medium frame revolvers(Model 10,12,13,14,15,17,18,19,20,etc.) L is for intermediate frame revolvers(Model 586,etc.) N frame revolvers were originally for high velocity, high pressure cartridges.(.357,44 magnum,38-44 high speed) For a long time, they were the largest frame revolvers made.(Model 27,28,29,57,58,etc.) Now, Smith&Wesson make the 460 and 500 magnums. These are even larger than the N frame. N prefix is the N series which startet in 1970. Best TrophyMatch45
