In real life, unlike the movies, a gun cannot be silenced completely. There is always some sound. However, the sound can be suppressed by means of either a suppressor attached to or built into the gun or by using special ammunition.

Sound suppression is typically achieved by either containing or slowing down the expanding gas from the cartridge exiting the barrel behind the bullet.
