Many were popular. By 1865 the Colt Navy and Army model revolvers (both percussion revolvers) were popular. However, after all six shots were fired, it literally took 15 minutes to reload! They were also unreliable and there were many reported cases of chambers blowing up in the users face.
In 1873 the Colt Single Action Army (also known as the .45, Peacemaker, SAA and Colt, among others) was a gate-loading six-shot revolver used by the US Army and famously by Western Gunslingers. Reload took about 20 seconds, making it a much sought after sidearm in a firefight.
