Mobile numbers no longer belong to specific networks. When mobile phones first became popular, the different service providers had 'blocks' of numbers, For example T-Mobile might have had all their numbers starting 079xx. If you wanted to change your provider - you usually had a new number issued. Once the whole numbers system was de-regulated, you could take your number to a different network than the one you started with. So - your old T-mobile number could now be connected to (for example) Orange.
