To many it's the sheer simplicity, yet detail of it. it has all the buttons that you would need, and yet it is prime for playing games. another reason it is an icon of design is that it truly is very small for the amount of space it has on it. I had a mp3 player that was about the size of an iPod classic, and it stored less than the ipod shuffle (the new one)
