There is no Winchester Model 77 in .284. The Model 77 is a .22 rimfire. The .284 Winchester is a centerfire cartridge made for the Models 88 and 100 in the early 1960's. It is interesting for having a relatively rare rebated rim (that's alliterative!) and continues to be popular with custom rifle makers because it offers power in a short case and action. Ruger made a few Model 77's in .284. Maybe that's what you have. Rod Smith Bethesda MD
