I came across this during a Google search so have no idea how long this question has been posted. But to answer in May 2008: The Winchester Model 54 was introduced in 1925. In that year there was only one basic model, offered in 30-06 and 270 Winchester chamberings. (Many sub-model and chambering permutations occurred in later production years.) If unaltered, I would assess one of these in excellent condition at about $500-$600 and about $400 in very good conditioin. Since this model introduced the 270 Winchester cartridge, perhaps a slight premium might be assessed for one that caliber. Also three digit or lower serial number pieces would also bring something of a premium. Nowadays, there are some pretty wild prices being asked for these rifles and most are not even original. To serious collectors, originality is the key and these are the true investment grade guns! If not original they are really just nice old shooters. "The Rifleman's Rifle" book by Roger Rule focuses on the Winchester Model 70 but also has a comprehensive chapter devoted to the Winchester Model 54. It is sometimes available through inter library loan.
