Sorry- this is not a happy answer. There is a widespread belief that Rock Island 1903s below serial number 285507 underwent a bad heat treatment process of the receiver, with the result being that they are not safe to fire. I personally have mixed feelings about the validity of this, but it is an opinion expressed by people that know more than I do. As a result, the value of low serial number Rock Island 1903s is very low- wall hanger status. I would urge you to have your rifle inspected by a competent riflesmith with strong knowledge of 1903s. If you were considering buying it, I would not.

made 1909.................however, recommended rifle be checked out by a gunsmith before shooting. early 1903 did not have a STRONG receiver...............
Please have a competent gunsmith familiar with 1903 style rifles examine your Rock Island. There was a problem with the early rifles from this arsenal (bad heat treatment of the receiver) and they are considered dangerous to shoot- the receiver is brittle. I do not have access to the serial number list right now, and it does not apply to ALL Rock Islands- but please have yours inspected before shooting it.
