The first black slaves in America where actually indentured servants and only had to work for 7 years. Then people started to just not let them go because the couldn't speak on there own behalf and then people found that you could make money and get free labor from slaves and that started a spark in the age of slaves. I hope I answered your question.
The Emancipation Proclamation, written by President Abraham Lincoln, gave slaves their freedom in American on January 1st, 1863. This was only applicable to slaves under control of the then-Confederate government, and had no effect, as the Southerners would not listen to what they believed to be "foreign" laws. Universal emancipation came in the form of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, granting all persons freedom, on January 31st, 1865.
The beginning of the 20th century in America and all countries, was on the 1st of January 1901, not 1900 as many believe. It ran from the 1st of January 1901 to the 31st of December 2000.
