Seasoning was the process of sending slaves to the Caribbean to work before bring them to the US. The sugar fields there were incredibly cruel, and most slaves died. Seasoning is nothing more than thinning out the weak slaves from the strong ones.

you are talking about the seasoning camps. Also seasoning is when the slaves were for example rubbed down with palm oil to disguise their wounds.

When slaves have been working as a slave for a long time, and they cooperate and are skilled.

1. Since in Black African Countries Chattel Slavery was unheard of and slavery it self was never used as a means of production. The newly arrive black African captive would have to be trained into the daily rigors that await them in the Americas. This training was carried out on Plantations in the Caribbean such as Jaimaica. Then the conditioned captive was taken to the American south to be worked as a slave. 2. Also seasoning was torture inflicted during the Atlantic slave trade for the purpose of "breaking" slaves. The abuse conditioned the African captives for their new lot in life, in some ways analogous to the practice of breaking horses.

Seasoning a slave meant to condition them for slavery.

They were sent to were sent to "seasoning camps" or "seasoning factories" to be tortured to the point of breaking. They were separated from anyone they had ties with, and their former identity was stripped from them. These camps were often outside of the United States, and they went to them before they were brought to the states to be auctioned.

One of the largest of these camps was located in Jamaica. It was considered to be especially brutal, and about 33% of the slaves that were brought here died as a result of their treatment or suicide.

As the slaves started to break, they were trained in the various skills of slavery. Once they were considered properly broken and trained, they were known as seasoned slaves.

At this point, they would be fed a little more, shaved, oiled, and made to look more presentable for auction.
