Both offer different advantages. Vertical relationship rely on a group environment, and horizontal relationships engage everyone in a team. Groups have a distinct leader and followers, whereas a team relies on everyone being equally involved.
In relationship to self-managed work teams the unit of command would be the team or project leader within the group.
I believe that since we are talking about 1 group (singular) the correct way to say this would be 'A group of horses is called a team'.
