90% of professionally pierced ear cartilage piercings work out without any issues, these are piercings done by a professional body piercer using aseptic techniques. 70% of ear cartilage piercings done with a piercing gun in a mall or hair salon result in bumps, lumps and healing issues, these are piercings performed by untrained and unlicensed individuals using piercing guns on areas they are not permitted to pierce but they do it any way.

Which ear should you use to get your cartilage periced?

Well that's up to you, there is no correct or gender defined ear cartilage piercing nor is there any sexual orientation specific cartilage piercing. So what ever side looks good on you is the way to go. Here's the names of some of the piercings you may be interested in. Helix or Vertical Helix, down further on the ear rim it's a Scapha piercing, closer to the front of the face on the ear rim it's a Helix root piercing.

Do you have to have a stud pierce on your cartilage on the ear when you first get it?

no. if you are not prone to irritation or infection you should be ok. Many people do though, because they are not sure how they're cartilage will react to a strange metal and they just want to be on the safe side. cartilage piercings are also not changed as often as earlobe piercings and so people like to choose a fancier stud or ring.

OK you mean to say "industrial piercing" this is a straight barbell through the outer ear cartilage in two locations on the ear. Right side left side makes no difference in the grand scheme of things and means nothing.

How do you prepare yourself for a cartilage piercing?

just don't think about it too much! the more you think about it, the more you'll freak yourself out. its not as bad as you think its going to be! i did mine myself....if i can shove a needle through my ear and come out fine then I'm sure that getting it done proffesionally isn't anything to worry about. just go and do it!

Can You show the ear cartilage?

No, you'd get an infection with many unpleasant side-effects. It would be stupid to even consider it.

Do cartilage piercings hurt more than a tetanus shot or a finger prick?

Depends. I got my cartilage pierced with a gun and was like being stapled. The hole closed and I redid it myself with a piercing needle. The piercing needle was 20 guage and did not hurt as much. Hard to compare to finger pricks as the nerves feel differentally in both parts of the body. (When self piercing, one side bled a lot but did not hurt. The other side did not bleed but hurt a lot more. It wasnt so much the sticking the needle through the skin as it was pushing the needle through the cartilage, even using a foam backing to aid the procedure. Anyways, they both healed well.)
