∙ 7y agoThe narrow part at the muzzle of a shotgun barrel is called the choke. It squeezes the shot so that it stays together. Without the choke, the shot flies in all directions as soon as it leaves the barrell.
from the breach face to the muzzle
A 'muzzle loader' is any firearm (or cannon) which does not have a breech mechanism and which is 'charged' (loaded with powder and shot) from the muzzle end of the barrel.
One where the powder and bullet (or shot) is loaded into the gun from the front end (muzzle) of the barrel.
The Choke of a shotgun is the amount of barrel restriction at the muzzle end which affects the shot pattern. A full choke will keep the spray pattern of the pellets closer together farther out than if the barrel was not restricted at the muzzle. If there is no restriction at the muzzle, the choke is said to be cylinder choke or cylinder bore.
The choke is a way of narrowing the barrel. It is designed to keep the shot in a tighter pattern. A full choke is supposed to increase the effective range of the weapon.
A barrel is the part that holds the shot shell or casing that the bullet or BBs go down towards the target. In a Center fire rifle or pistol the barrel has rifling to help stabilize the bullet after it has left the muzzle
The term "Long Tom" was used to denote a muzzle loading cannon that had a barrel much longer than standard. While slower to load, it had greater range. Over the years it has been applied to guns with a longer than usual barrel, notably shotguns. It is a name used by several makers- the earliest that I have found is between the late 1890's and early 1900s, but they were made up into the 1920s."Long Tom" was an unofficial name for a muzzle loading cannon with a much longer than usual barrel- slower to load, greater range. The name was borrowed by shotgun makers around 1900 to denote a shotgun (usually a single shot) with a longer than usual barrel. Not a brand name, but a model name.
A longer shotgun barrel typically results in higher muzzle velocity due to increased internal pressure build-up as the shot travels along a longer pathway, allowing for more complete powder burn and acceleration of the shot. This can result in a slight increase in overall velocity and possibly better shot pattern at longer distances.
i have a remington 870 wingmaster its my grandpas and it has 3 barrels the slug , the bird shot barrel and the muzzeloader barrel it takes a 209 primer just like the the regular muzzeloader its very interesting
A choke is a small reduction in the inside diameter of the barrel, very near the muzzle. The choke squeezes the shot together, resulting in a more dense pattern of shot, and increasing the effective range somewhat.
Velocity loss is probably in the area of 200 to 300 fps less than a rifle.
